Re: The Hardest Lesson in Hatching

It's easy to second-guess yourself after something like this, but you had good intentions. Your new day 27 rule is a smart adjustment for the future.

Re: Buff Orpingtons or Black Australorps? Help Me Choose!

If I had to pick one, I'd go with Australorps. They're great layers, hardy in various climates, and still friendly enough to enjoy being around people.

Re: Clipped Wings, but My Hens Are Still Flying Over the FenceWhat Went Wrong?

Clipping only one wing is usually enough to unbalance them, but some birds adapt. Try reclipping and making sure you're getting the right feathers.

Re: When a Chick Turns Into a Tiny Terror What Should I Do?

Your instincts were right to isolate him temporarily, but it's also important to observe whether this is typical pecking order behavior or something more serious. Some cockerels start showing dominance early, but it doesn't always mean they'll be a long-term problem. Try separating him for a few ...

Re: Chicks Keep Getting Soaked, Waterer Mystery!

Maybe they're pecking at the seams and causing the water to release faster? Some chicks love to play with their waterer!

Re: Managing Excessive Dust in Chicken Dust Baths

Have you thought about adding some peat moss instead of using only dirt? It,s still natural and will absorb moisture without creating so much dust. You might also want to limit how much DE is in there because it can get very powdery.

Re: Ground-Level vs. Raised and Ventilation Concerns

A good alternative to a cupola is ridge venting or soffit vents. They provide continuous airflow and might be a cheaper solution than a fully functional cupola.

Re: Best Deworming Methods for Large Free-Range Flock Without Handling Each Chicken

One thing I've done is using a deworming mix in the feed, which helps ensure that all the chickens get their treatment. You just mix the powder with the feed, and they eat it as usual. It's a convenient, hands-off solution, but you'll need to repeat it regularly for full effectiveness.

Re: Is My Silkie Hen Cold or Broody? What Should I Do?

I think your Silkie is likely broody. She's probably feeling secure in the nesting box and is trying to hatch eggs (even if they aren't hers). As long as she's still eating and drinking and isn't shivering, she's likely not cold. Silkies are quite adaptable, and if the weather does turn colder, your ...

Do I Need to Sift Out the Seeds when Composting Chicken Run Waste?

Hi everyone,

Ive noticed that my hens are quite picky eaters, and a lot of their feed ends up scattered all over the run. Im trying to compost everything from the run, including the uneaten feed, bedding, and waste, but Im not sure if the seeds left behind will help with the composting process or ...
