Re: Is My Silkie Hen Cold or Broody? What Should I Do?
It's possible that she's broody, especially if she's hissing and sitting on eggs. Broody hens often act like this, and Silkies are known for it. If she's only staying in the nesting box at night and doesn't seem distressed, it's probably not the cold. I'd continue using the brood plate when the ...

Re: Can Chickens Eat Used Fryer Oil?
Processed oils from deep frying can be unhealthy for chickens. Safer treats would be suet, coconut oil, or rendered animal fat.

Re: Balancing Oats in Layer Feed, How Much Is Too Much?
I tried adding about 25% oats once, and my egg production dropped noticeably. I'd suggest keeping it closer to 10-15% to avoid that issue!

I tried growing Azolla in a greenhouse here in Scotland, and it actually worked! Maybe a small indoor setup could help you test it in Ireland.

Try wrapping it during the day and taking it off at night so she can roost normally. That might give it a chance to heal faster.

Re: Who Killed My Rooster?
A possum's jaws aren't strong enough to decapitate a rooster, especially an adult bird. A raccoon or mink is far more likely. Check for entry points under the barn.

Re: Concern Over Chicken Walking Oddly After Pooping. Could It Be Constipation?
From my experience, it seems like the combination of stress and a potential digestive issue caused her symptoms. She could have been constipated, but the large poop and her subsequent return to normal behavior suggest she was just clearing things out. Make sure she's getting a good mix of fiber ...

Re: Concerned About Chicks with Curled Toes, What Should I Do?
If they were mine, I'd make chick shoes for the ones with the worst curling and leave the mild cases alone. As long as they can walk comfortably, they should be okay. 158 Go with 6'. Chickens can be surprisingly determined when they want to explore. A little height difference won't be too noticeable ...
