Re: Help! Late Chicken Egg Still Has Blood Vessels
Some chicks take longer due to genetic factors, improper incubator calibration, or humidity fluctuations. As long as there's blood in the veins, it's not ready to hatch. Keep it warm, humid, and watch for movement. If it pipped internally but isn't progressing, you might need to help, but only after ...

Re: Best Fencing for Half-Acre Poultry Run Chain Link vs. Electric?
Electric fencing is great for deterring predators but requires regular maintenance. If weeds grow near it, it can short out, making it ineffective when you need it most.

Re: Why Are My Chicks Noisy at Night?
Your chicks may be calling for reassurance as night falls. At this age, they are still getting used to their environment, and darkness can make them uneasy. Some people find that adding a dim red light inside the coop can help them settle down gradually instead of being plunged into darkness all at ...

Re: Older Chickens Eyebrow Area Drooping, Should I Be Concerned?
Hello everyone,
I have an older chicken in my coopshes at least 4 or 5 years old, maybe older. About two weeks ago, I noticed that the skin above her eyes (what looks like her "eyebrows") has started to droop.
Other than that, she seems completely normal. She has a healthy appetite, stays active ...

Re: Brooder Plate or Heat Lamp, Which One Should I Use?
I have two batches of chicks hatching soonone small group in early February and a larger group in March. The first batch will start in a plastic bin inside before moving to a heated garage brooder. The second batch will be bigger, so I might need multiple heat sources.
Should I go with a heat ...

Can I Use Grass Clippings for Chicken Bedding?
Im considering using grass clippings as bedding for my chickens. Since rain isnt a big issue and Id clean it out regularly, would this work? In the winter, I plan to switch to hay, but Im wondering if grass clippings are a safe and cost-effective option. Has anyone tried this?

Re: A Fresh Start: Building My Dream Coop from the Ground Up
Bears are tricky! I'd recommend a solid coop with hardware cloth on every opening and an electric perimeter fence.

Re: Concerned About Humidity Drop During Incubation: Should I Be Worried?
I had a similar situation during my last hatch, and the eggs hatched just fine. The dip in humidity isn't ideal, but you're still in the safe zone. You can make up for lost humidity now, but do watch it closely as you get closer to lockdown.

Re: Unexpected Extra Eggs Under My Broody, Will She Hatch Them All?
She'll probably sit for a day or two after the first chicks hatch, but after that, she'll leave the nest to care for them. The later eggs may not get a chance to hatch unless you intervene.
