When I moved my chicks outside, I decided to try sand in the coop after hearing it was easy to clean and helped control odor. Unfortunately, that hasnt been my experience at all.

Some bacteria and parasites can thrive in septic lagoons, even in the top layer. I wouldn't take the risk of feeding it to animals.

Chain link with electric wire adds physical strength. Pure electric works short-term but might fail if power cuts or animals push through despite the shocks.

If you're just maintaining the flock, occasional inbreeding might not be a huge issue, but watch for signs of weakness or health problems in the chicks.

Golden Comets have been my best early layers, usually starting around 17 weeks. They are a hybrid breed designed for high egg production, so not only do they start early, but they also lay consistently. They're also very docile, which is great if you want a friendly flock.
