Best Antibiotic Option for Respiratory Symptoms?

Post by NestDetective »

My bantam rooster has started showing mild respiratory symptomssome sneezing and mucus, but no swollen eyes or discharge. Hes still active, eating, and drinking normally.

I was planning to use Tylan 50, but I cant find it in stock anywhere. I do have amoxicillin on hand and can also purchase Tiagard if needed. Which one would be the better choice for treating this?

Would love any advice from those with experience treating similar issues. Thanks!

Make sure he's getting enough vitamins, especially vitamin A. Respiratory infections can sometimes be linked to deficiencies.

A little raw garlic in his water can help boost his immune system while you decide on the best antibiotic.

I had a hen with similar symptoms, and amoxicillin worked well for her. I'd start with that if you already have it.

Have you noticed any other symptoms, like wheezing or gurgling sounds? That might help determine the best course of treatment.

I'd start with Tiagard. It's specifically for respiratory infections and has worked well for my flock in the past.

Have you checked his environment? Sometimes dust or ammonia buildup can trigger symptoms that look like an infection.

If he starts to decline, I'd act fast and get whatever antibiotic you can find. Respiratory issues can get serious quickly.

If you're seeing mucus, it might be mycoplasma. In that case, Tiagard or another macrolide antibiotic would be the best option.

If he's still eating and drinking, that's a great sign! Keep monitoring him closely, and make sure he stays warm and stress-free.
