A good alternative to a cupola is ridge venting or soffit vents. They provide continuous airflow and might be a cheaper solution than a fully functional cupola.

I went with a raised coop because it keeps things drier and makes cleaning easier. If you're concerned about rodents, raising it even a little can make a big difference.

Maryland summers can be brutal! If a cupola isn't an option, I'd look into adding additional windows with hardware cloth or a solar-powered vent fan to improve circulation.

You can DIY a cupola with some basic materials! I built one using a vented roof cap and some scrap wood, and it works great for extra airflow without breaking the bank.

If you love the ground-level look, go for it! Just make sure the coop is well-ventilated, and consider laying a concrete or hardware cloth base underneath to keep out burrowing pests.
