This sounds frustrating! Maybe try switching to a shallow dish with marbles in it until you find a better solution.

Could there be an air pressure issue with the container? If air is getting trapped, it might be releasing all the water suddenly.

Sounds like they might be stepping into the trough and splashing the water out. A larger waterer or adding small pebbles to the trough might help.

Have you checked if there's a small crack or leak in the waterer? Sometimes tiny cracks cause slow leaks that go unnoticed.
