Recently, we dug into the center of the pileit was bone dry and smelled sweet and earthy, likely from fungi or bacteria. No musty or foul odors, but Im wondering if it could contain aspergillus spores.

Would it be safe to use more of this mulch in the coop, or should I be cautious? I want to bulk up the litter before winter hits!

If you're dealing with a cold climate, adding extra dry material before winter is smart. Just layer it gradually, and keep checking for any signs of excess moisture or smell changes.

Mulch is great for deep litter, but don't rely on just one material. Adding dried leaves, straw, or pine shavings can improve balance and prevent compaction, keeping things drier and reducing mold risk.

The earthy smell is usually a sign of good decomposition, not harmful mold. Aspergillus tends to have a distinct, musty odor. If your pile has stayed dry in the center, the chances of harmful mold should be minimal.
