I tried alfalfa hay once, and my chickens ate it all within a couple of days! It's not the worst thing, but it didn't last as bedding. If you go this route, be ready to replace it often.

In cold weather, bedding choice is really important for warmth. Alfalfa is soft, but it doesn't insulate as well as straw. You might want to add extra bedding or even some sand underneath for better warmth.

Alfalfa hay can work as bedding, but since it's rich in nutrients, your chickens might eat a lot of it. That could lead to crop impaction if they overdo it. If you use it, make sure they have plenty of grit to help with digestion.

If you're already feeding a high-protein diet, using alfalfa hay as bedding might be overkill. Too much protein can lead to kidney issues in chickens. Maybe mix it with wood shavings to balance it out?
