Is Rice Safe for Chickens? Cooked vs. Uncooked

Ive been looking into different treat options for my flock and was wondering about feeding rice. Ive heard mixed opinions on whether its safe for chickens to eat cooked or uncooked rice. Some people say its perfectly fine, while others claim it can cause digestive issues or even crop problems.
Has anyone here fed rice to their chickens regularly? If so, do you prefer to give it cooked or uncooked? Are there any benefits or risks I should be aware of? I want to make sure Im providing safe and nutritious treats.
Also, do certain breeds handle rice better than others? My flock consists of both standard and bantam chickens, so I want to be cautious with anything that could be harder for them to digest.
Looking forward to hearing your experiences and advice!

My flock prefers cooked rice, but they'll peck at uncooked grains too. Just make sure they have grit if you're giving them dry rice.

Cooked rice is perfectly safe! My chickens love it, and it's easy for them to digest. Just avoid adding salt or seasonings.

Chickens will eat just about anything, and rice is no exception! Mine gobble up cooked rice, especially when mixed with veggies or protein.

I've fed my flock both cooked and uncooked rice for years without any problems. Chickens have powerful digestive systems, especially with access to grit. The idea that uncooked rice will swell in their stomachs is a myth, chickens don't have the same digestive process as birds like pigeons that might struggle more with dry grains. Cooked rice, on the other hand, is a great soft treat, especially in cold weather when they can use the extra energy. Just be mindful of portion sizes and ensure they're still getting their balanced layer feed as their primary food source.

Just don't make rice their main food source. It's a good treat, but they need a balanced diet with protein and nutrients.

Rice can be a great way to supplement their diet, but it should never replace their main feed. My flock enjoys cooked rice mixed with other treats like mealworms or chopped greens. While chickens can eat raw rice just fine, I personally prefer cooking it since it's softer and easier for them to eat, especially for younger birds. If you do go with uncooked rice, ensure they have plenty of grit available to aid digestion.

I feed mine rice all the time, both cooked and raw. They love it, and it's a great way to use up leftovers.

I've raised chickens for years, and rice has never caused any issues in my flock. I do find that brown rice is a better option than white, as it has more fiber and nutrients. If feeding uncooked, scattering it as scratch helps encourage natural foraging behavior. Cooked rice is great in winter since it provides warmth and energy, but I always mix it with other foods to keep their diet balanced. Overall, rice is a safe, occasional treat in moderation!

I usually feed rice in moderation, but I prefer cooked over uncooked. Cooked rice is softer, easier to digest, and less likely to cause any potential crop issues. That said, my chickens have eaten uncooked rice plenty of times, especially when I scatter it for foraging. The key is variety, rice should only be a treat, not a staple, since it lacks many essential nutrients. If you're feeding cooked rice, make sure it's plain and unsalted.
