Best Dust Bath Options for 4-Week-Old Chicks?

Hi everyone!
Im new to raising chickens from incubated eggs and want to give my chicks the best start. Ive read that introducing a dust bath around three weeks old is beneficial, but mine are now four weeks, and I still havent set one up.
I have a small flock of six, currently housed indoors, so I need something affordable, easy to clean, and safe for young chicks. There are so many optionsvolcanic ash, wood ash, sand, and different brandsthat Im feeling overwhelmed.
For those with experience, what has worked best for your young chicks? Should I mix materials or stick with just one? Also, since theyre still indoors, do you have any tips for keeping things tidy? Id love recommendations that wont break the bank but will still provide a good, natural bathing experience for my little ones.

For baby chicks, I recommend a blend of fine sand and sifted wood ash. Sand helps keep it from getting too dusty, and ash offers parasite control. Make sure the ash is from untreated wood and completely cool before adding it. Also, a low-sided plastic container will keep the mess contained while they enjoy their bath.

I use a mix of fine sand and a little wood ash. The chicks love it, and it helps with mites. Just keep it dry!

I personally use a mix of sifted dirt, sand, and a bit of DE (diatomaceous earth). It's a great, natural way to help keep their skin healthy. Make sure the DE is food-grade and not overused, as too much can be harmful if inhaled. Keeping the dust bath in a low-sided container helps control mess indoors.

A shallow pan with fine dirt from your yard (if pesticide-free) is an easy, free option. Chicks naturally love it!

Try reptile sand from pet stores. It's clean, dust-free, and easy to manage indoors. Your chicks will love it!

Since your chicks are indoors, keeping dust down is key. I suggest using a mix of play sand and a bit of dry soil from your yard. Avoid using any ashes until they move outside, as fine ash can create too much airborne dust inside. Chicks will instinctively bathe, so just make sure the container is large enough for them to enjoy it without spilling too much!

Since they're inside, avoid anything too dusty. Try a mixture of dry soil and fine-grain sand in a shallow dish. It's simple and effective!

I start mine on plain dirt and fine sand inside. Later, I add wood ash and DE when they move outdoors. Works well and is cost-effective!

Play sand is cheap and perfect for indoor dust baths. Once they're outside, you can mix in some wood ash and diatomaceous earth for added benefits.
