How Do I Handle Pests Like Mice and Rats in My Chicken Coop?

Hi everyone,

I’m new to keeping chickens and recently noticed signs of mice (droppings and small chew marks) around my coop. I’m worried they’ll eat the feed or, worse, spread diseases to my flock.

What’s the best way to keep mice and rats out of the coop without harming my chickens? Are there any preventative steps I can take to stop them from coming back?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Hi there! The best way to keep mice and rats out is to store your chicken feed in an airtight, rodent-proof container, like a galvanized metal bin.

Also, make sure you clean up any spilled feed daily and keep the area around your coop free of debris or tall grass where rodents can hide.

Setting up traps outside the coop (away from your chickens) can help control the problem too. Good luck!

Great question! Rodents can be a big issue, but there are several things you can do to manage them:
  • Feed Storage: Always store your chicken feed in a metal bin with a tight-fitting lid. Mice and rats can chew through plastic, but metal will keep them out.
  • Coop Maintenance: Seal up any small holes or gaps in the coop where rodents might sneak in. Use hardware cloth for ventilation openings instead of chicken wire since it’s harder for rodents to get through.
  • Keep It Clean: Minimize food waste by using a treadle feeder or one that reduces spillage. Sweep up any feed that spills on the ground, as that’s an open invitation for pests.
  • Traps and Deterrents: Place snap traps or live traps outside the coop, away from where your chickens roam. You can also try natural deterrents like peppermint oil or planting mint around the coop, as rodents dislike the smell.
  • Remove Hiding Spots: Keep the area around your coop free of clutter, woodpiles, or tall grass, which are perfect hiding places for rodents.
With these steps, you’ll reduce the chances of a rodent infestation and keep your flock healthy and safe.

I've found that regular cleaning of the coop and yard helps a lot. Mice are attracted to food scraps, so removing that will make your chickens' space less appealing. If you have a garden, planting herbs like lavender or rosemary nearby can help as well.

You might want to start by sealing up any holes or gaps around the coop. Mice can get through surprisingly small spaces, so check around doors, windows, and the foundation. Keeping the area clean and picking up leftover food also helps deter them.

You can install hardware cloth around the base of the coop to prevent mice from entering. Also, keep all feed in sealed containers and regularly check the coop for any droppings or signs of new infestations. Prevention is key!

Try using a natural deterrent like peppermint oil around the coop. Mice don't like the smell, and it's safe for your chickens. Also, consider using a metal feed container that mice can't chew through, and store your feed in a cool, dry place.

If you're looking for a non-lethal way to manage mice, you could set up a live trap. Check the traps regularly, and once caught, release the mice far away from your property. Keeping the coop tidy will also discourage them from sticking around.
