Avoiding the Rookie Mistake: Chicken Feed Storage Woes
When I started keeping chickens, I thought I had everything figured out. I bought the best feed I could find and stored it in the original bags in a corner of my shed. I didn’t think much about it at the time, but this seemingly simple decision turned into a costly mistake.
One morning, I went to refill the feeder and found an unpleasant surprise: mice had chewed through the feed bags. Not only had they helped themselves to the feed, but they also left droppings everywhere, contaminating the whole stash. To make matters worse, the feed that remained had absorbed moisture from the air and was starting to mold. I had to throw it all out—a painful lesson both for my wallet and my flock.
I quickly realized the importance of proper feed storage. After some research and advice from fellow chicken keepers, I invested in a couple of metal, airtight storage bins with locking lids. These bins are not only rodent-proof but also keep the feed dry and fresh. I now store the bins on a raised platform to prevent moisture from seeping in from the ground.
Since making the switch, I haven’t had any issues with pests or spoiled feed. My chickens are thriving on fresh, uncontaminated feed, and I’ve learned to always prioritize proper storage for their supplies.
Lesson Learned: Always store your chicken feed in a secure, airtight container to protect it from pests and moisture. This simple step saves money, reduces waste, and ensures your flock stays healthy and happy.

I store my feed in a cool, dry basement and use bungee cords to secure the lids on my bins. No pests or moisture issues so far!
Live like you ain't afraid to die, and don't be scared, just enjoy your ride.

I had the same issue with mice ruining my feed! Switching to metal bins with locking lids was a game-changer for me too.

I keep my feed in a sealed trash can with a locking lid. It's simple, effective, and keeps everything fresh.

I've found that adding a layer of diatomaceous earth around my feed storage area helps deter pests naturally.

I've had success using old chest freezers as feed storage. They're airtight, rodent-proof, and easy to organize.

I learned the hard way that feed bags aren't enough. Now I store my feed in a raised, airtight container, and it's made all the difference.

I learned to store feed off the ground after losing a batch to moisture. Now I use wooden pallets and airtight containers.
