Re: Dark Nights in the Coop Is It a Problem?

Hey everyone, I just ran into a small issue and wanted to check if its a big deal. The light in my chicken coop just burned out, and my replacement wont arrive until next week. My birds are used to having some light in the evenings, but now theyll be in total darkness once the sun sets.

Will this ...

Re: Raising Layers & Meat Birds Together Brooder Setup Advice Needed

If you do brood them together, keep an eye on behavior. Cornish Cross will dominate food and space, and the layers might start getting pushed out. Adding extra feeders and waterers can help, but separation is still the best long-term solution.

Re: How to Safely Disinfect a Coop After Disease Outbreak?

Rinsing isn't necessary if the coop is unoccupied for months. However, for future biosecurity, keeping a footbath with a poultry-safe disinfectant near the entrance helps.

Re: Best Meat Bird for Free-Ranging?

Im new to raising meat birds and looking for a breed that can free-range well with my layers or be penned separately but still grow at a decent rate.

I want something thats active, healthy, and able to forageunlike Cornish Cross, which require constant care and cleanup. Ideally, the breed would ...

Re: Secure Cover and Barrier Options for Quarantine Run

If you're just using the run for daytime confinement, the soccer net might work, but for overnight security, I'd recommend something more durable.

Re: What Breed is a White Hen with a Leghorn like Build that Lays Green Eggs?

If they're laying green eggs and have a slim build like a Leghorn, then Easter Eggers or a cross of Ameraucanas could be the most likely candidates. Many hybrids of these breeds lay green or blue eggs.

Re: Hen Lethargic with Bloody Droppings

Bloody stool, lethargy, and standing still are classic signs of coccidiosis. It's a fast-moving disease, but thankfully, Corid is an effective treatment. Mix it into the drinking water as directed (1.5 tsp powder per gallon or 2 tsp liquid per gallon for five days). Remove vitamins while treating ...

Re: Brooder Plate or Heat Lamp, Which One Should I Use?

Heat lamps are cheap and effective but risky. Brooder plates mimic a hen better and reduce stress. If you get one, ensure it's big enough for your whole hatch.

Re: When Can Chicks Start Eating Sunflower Seeds and Other Treats?

Chicks can have soft treats like scrambled eggs early on, but sunflower seeds are best introduced later. Around 6-8 weeks is a safe timeframe to start.

Re: Managing Excessive Dust in Chicken Dust Baths

I,ve been using a mix of dirt, sand, and a little bit of ash in my dust bath area. It,s effective, but I also keep it covered to avoid excessive drying. If you keep it too dry, the dust will get out of hand. Adding a bit of moisture or moisture-absorbing material helps a lot.
