Re: Hen Lethargic with Bloody Droppings

Bloody droppings and lethargy often signal coccidiosis. Start Corid immediately in drinking water and monitor closely. Time is critical with this disease!

Re: How to Keep Chickens Close to the Coop for Safety?

Keeping chickens contained can be tricky. While scratch can be a good lure to bring them back, I found that a simple electric fence worked wonders for my chickens. It creates a boundary they can't cross but still allows them to roam freely within the safe area. Additionally, I've noticed that my ...

Re: Feeding Wild Game Scraps to Chickens Whats Safe and Whats Not?

Chickens will self-regulate to some degree, but I wouldn't rely on meat alone as a primary supplement. Free-ranging will help them balance their intake, and their feed should provide the right nutrients. Game scraps are great, but too much organ meat can cause vitamin imbalances.

Re: Can Slightly Chlorinated Water Improve Hatch Rates?

I've read that bacteria in your incubator can lower hatch rates, and some people recommend washing eggs with antibacterial soap before setting them. That got me wonderingwould using slightly chlorinated water in the incubators humidity tray be safe? Could it even help reduce bacteria and improve ...

Choosing a Coop: Ground-Level vs. Raised & Ventilation Concerns

Hi everyone, I'm planning to get my first chickens this spring and have found a coop builder who offers both ground-level and raised coop designs. We're leaning toward an 8x16 coop but are debating whether a ground-level setup is a good idea.

The builder assures us that his ground-level coops are ...

Re: Can Chickens Eat Used Fryer Oil?

If the fryer oil has been used multiple times, it's not a great idea. Reheated oils can create harmful compounds. If you must use it, strain it well, ensure it's not rancid, and only give it in very small amounts.

Re: Pecking Our Way to Sustainability: How Backyard Chickens Transformed Our Garden

Chickens truly are the unsung heroes of sustainable gardening. Their waste is a powerful fertilizer, their foraging keeps pest populations in check, and their constant scratching improves soil health. What I love most is how they naturally integrate into the homesteading cycle, composting, weed ...

Re: Why is My Hen Laying Tiny Eggs After Winter?

It sounds like your hen is just adjusting to the change in season. The first few eggs after a break are often smaller. Keep a close eye on her, but I wouldn't worry unless the tiny eggs persist or she starts showing signs of health issues.
