Re: Best Fencing for Half-Acre Poultry Run Chain Link vs. Electric?

I've used both setups, and while electric fencing can work, it requires proper maintenance. Wild boars and badgers are powerful enough to push through if desperate. A physical barrier like chain link gives a solid defense, and adding electric strands reinforces it. I recommend at least a buried ...

Re: Dark Nights in the Coop Is It a Problem?

Hey everyone, I just ran into a small issue and wanted to check if its a big deal. The light in my chicken coop just burned out, and my replacement wont arrive until next week. My birds are used to having some light in the evenings, but now theyll be in total darkness once the sun sets.

If fast growth isn't your top priority, dual-purpose breeds like Delawares or New Hampshire Reds could work. They're good foragers and grow out in 16-20 weeks. If you want something quicker but still hardy, Red Rangers or Kosher Kings are great choices. They take about 9-12 weeks and are much more ...

Re: Concerned About Chicks with Curled Toes, What Should I Do?

I was spending some time with my chicks today and noticed that a few of them (4 out of 15) have toes that are curling inward or to the side. Theyre still walking fine and dont seem to be in pain, but Im worried this could be an issue down the line. Is there anything I should do to help correct it ...

Re: Desperate for Help My Rooster Wont Stop Attacking Me!

If rehoming isn't an option, consider creating a separate enclosure for him. That way, he can still protect his flock without attacking you.

Re: Raising Quail for Fresh Meat & Eggs Where Do I Start?

A good way to figure out your numbers is to start small. Try keeping 5 hens and a rooster, hatch a few eggs, and track how many quail you actually eat in a month. Adjust from there!

Re: Do I Need a Red Heat Bulb for My Brooder? Understanding Heat Sources for Chicks

Chicks raised under constant light (even red) tend to be more agitated. A heat plate is the best alternative,it's safer and helps them develop natural behavior.
