Are you selecting for specific traits beyond egg color? If you're going for high egg production, Leghorns crossed with Australorps or Sussex can create super layers that are also cold hardy.

I have experience with both breeds, and they generally do well together. However, Silkies can sometimes be picked on in mixed flocks, even by docile breeds like Cochins. If you have space, a three-cage system could work well,one for breeders, one for layers, and one for grow-outs. That way, you have a steady cycle of eggs and meat.

Chickens don't mind texture changes! Even if they turn mushy, they'll still love them as a high-protein snack.
