Can Silkies and Buff Cochins Live Together?

Post by Eggspeditionist »

I love both Silkies and Buff Cochins and want to keep them together. Since Cochins are larger, will that be a problem?

Any advice from experienced owners? Thanks!

It's a good match! Just make sure Silkies aren't overwhelmed and that they have a safe, comfortable space suited to their needs.

I've had Silkies and Cochins together without issues. They're both gentle, but Silkies need special considerations like ground-level resting spots and easy access to food.

Yes! Both breeds are docile. Just ensure the Silkies aren't pushed around during feeding time.

Buff Cochins and Silkies are both excellent choices for a calm flock! I've found that as long as they have enough space and aren't overcrowded, they get along well. Since Cochins are much larger, be sure to provide multiple feeding and watering stations so the Silkies don't get pushed aside. Additionally, Silkies don't roost high like Cochins, so having a few low perches or ground-level bedding areas will make them more comfortable. Overall, they make a great pairing, but just observe their interactions as they establish a pecking order.

Both breeds are super friendly and fluffy, so they should be a great match! Just be mindful of space, feeding access, and perch height for the Silkies.

I have experience with both breeds, and they generally do well together. However, Silkies can sometimes be picked on in mixed flocks, even by docile breeds like Cochins. Their fluffy feathers limit their vision, making them more vulnerable. If you do keep them together, consider separate feeding areas and make sure the Silkies have places to retreat if needed. If introduced properly, they should do well together!
