Re: Can You Hatch a Cracked Egg?
I used candle wax once and had one chick hatch. Not ideal, but it's possible. Just be extra careful with bacteria and humidity control.

Re: New to Backyard Chickens, Best Cold-Hardy, Colorful Egg Layers?
I'd recommend a mix of heritage breeds like Dominiques, Buckeyes, and Easter Eggers. They're all cold-hardy, good winter layers, and lay a mix of brown, blue, and green eggs. The Buckeye especially is great for cold climates!

Re: Buff Orpingtons or Black Australorps? Help Me Choose!
Black Australorps are fantastic layers and tolerate heat better than Orpingtons. They're friendly but not as clingy. If you want a low-maintenance, productive flock, they're a great choice. I've found they adjust well to different conditions and are generally hardy birds. If your summers get really ...

If you don't want to turn the pile, another option is adding materials that improve aeration, like wood chips or straw. It keeps the air circulating better and speeds things up!

Re: Taking Chicks from a Broody Hen Will She Miss Them?
I've done this before, and the broody hen didn't seem to notice after a day or so. The key is making sure the chicks transition smoothly into your care. Keep them warm and handle them frequently for bonding. If they're used to a mother's warmth, a heat source is essential. You can also place a soft ...

Re: Best Deworming Methods for Large Free-Range Flock Without Handling Each Chicken
I personally prefer using the water-soluble dewormers. You can easily mix them into the flock's water, and they ingest the medication as they drink. It's simple and efficient, especially for free-range chickens who aren't easy to catch. Just make sure you follow the recommended dosage instructions.

Re: My Broody Hen's Nest Got Messy, Should I Clean Her or Leave Her Alone?
Broody hens are very sensitive, so I'd suggest only cleaning her if the mess is really bad. Use a damp cloth to wipe away any dirt or sticky spots, but avoid soaking her. It might be best to let her be so she can continue to focus on her eggs.

Re: Safe Treats for Newly Hatched Chicks?
I raise chicks often, and their first "treat" is usually soft mashed banana or plain yogurt. Both are gentle on their digestion and a fun way to bond with them!

Skinny Hens Breed or Bad Nutrition?
We recently brought home five hens from a backyard flock that was being downsized. As soon as I picked them up, I could tell something wasnt right. They felt way too light, almost fragile. They dont have the usual plump, healthy look I expect in my birds.

Re: A New Chapter: Growing My Flock and Hatching for the First Time
Gardening and chickens go hand in hand! Do you let your flock free-range in the garden, or do you keep them separate?
