Balancing Oats in Layer Feed, How Much Is Too Much?

Post by CoopCrafter »

Hey everyone!

I like to mix whole oats into my flocks feed when the temperatures drop, as Ive heard it can help with energy and warmth. In the past, Ive just eyeballed the amount, but Id like to be more precise this year to make sure Im not over- or underfeeding.

Right now, Im feeding a 22% protein show flock pellet. What ratio of oats do you recommend adding to balance nutrition without reducing protein too much? Do you notice any changes in your flock when you add oats?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences!

I like to adjust the ratio depending on the cold. When it's just chilly, I do 10% oats, but when it's really cold, I go up to 20% and mix in some extra protein sources.

Oats are awesome for winter, but I'd suggest fermenting them if you're feeding a lot. It helps with digestibility and makes nutrients more available!

I've found that adding about 1 part oats to 4 parts feed keeps the protein level reasonable while giving them extra energy. They love scratching through it too!

I'd recommend running the numbers! If you're feeding a 22% protein pellet and add 10% oats (about 12% protein), your final mix will still be pretty high in protein. Maybe try a calculator to find your perfect balance?

Have you considered feeding black oil sunflower seeds alongside the oats? They're higher in fat and protein, which helps counteract the protein dilution from the oats.

Oats are great for winter warmth, but I've found they slow down digestion a little. If you're feeding a lot, watch for any signs of sluggish crops or slow digestion.

If you're feeding a high-protein pellet, you have a bit more room to add oats without dropping protein too low. I'd say around 15% max should keep things balanced.

Whole oats are great for feather health and digestion, but I'd be careful not to exceed 20% of the total feed, especially with a high-protein pellet. Too much can lead to deficiencies over time.

I personally go with a handful of oats per bird in the morning, separate from their main feed. That way, they get the extra energy but still eat enough balanced layer feed.
