Chicks Keep Getting Soaked, Waterer Mystery!

Post by FarmsteadFowl »

Ive used the same standard chick waterer for multiple broods without issues, but this time my 4-day-old chicks keep ending up soaked! The waterer is upright but completely empty, and I cant figure out how theyre spilling it. Its happened four times now! I even tried switching containers and taping it down, but no luck.

Also, their feathers are matted with food and droppings after each soaking.

Should I bathe them or just let them dry naturally? Any ideas on why this is happening and how to stop it?

I had this issue once, and it turned out the waterer wasn't screwed on tightly enough. Try securing it really well and see if that helps.

Could something be knocking the waterer over from outside the brooder, like a draft or another animal?

If they're getting soaked and matted, you can carefully wipe them down with a damp cloth, but make sure they're fully dry before putting them back under the heater.

Maybe they're pecking at the seams and causing the water to release faster? Some chicks love to play with their waterer!

Try a heavier waterer, like a glass jar version, to prevent tipping. Plastic ones are light and easy for active chicks to move.

If they're getting soaked multiple times a day, it's best to keep a very close eye on their body temp. Cold chicks can go downhill fast!

Chicks can be surprisingly strong when they all push against something! Maybe try placing the waterer on a small elevated platform to prevent tipping.

I wouldn't bathe them unless absolutely necessary. Just keep them warm and let them dry off naturally. Maybe use a paper towel to gently remove excess mess.

Is it possible they're piling on top of each other and pushing against the waterer? Sometimes brooder crowding can cause unexpected issues.
