Help Needed for Two Weak Hatchlings

Hi everyone, I just hatched 7 chicks! Five came out strong on the 20th day (1/24/25) and are doing great in the nursery box, eating and drinking since yesterday.

Two more hatched early this morning (1/25/25) but seem weak. They’re chirping and moving a little, but neither is standing or walking. One chick has something sticking out from its back end but has strong legs, while the other is dragging one leg and isn’t gripping with it.

I gave them a mix of vitamins and chick starter with warm water using a syringe. The lighter one drank well, but the black chick wasn’t very interested. They’re still in the incubator.

Does anyone have advice? I’m really worried and could use some help.

I've experienced similar issues. The condensation builds up when the heat and humidity aren't balanced. Adding more holes for airflow might help, but also check the placement of your lamp. Try raising it a bit higher to reduce the heat concentration near the walls.

Weak chicks sometimes need extra time. A vitamin boost may help the leg issue, and taping it could offer support. If the protrusion doesn't shrink, monitor closely. Keep them warm and hydrated-they might improve soon!

I know that late hatchers can struggle but often recover.
Try dipping the weak chicks beak in water to encourage drinking.
If the leg looks splayed, gentle support may help.

Keeping them in the incubator is good. They need warmth.
The chick with something sticking out might have unabsorbed yolk; leave it undisturbed.

For the leg issue, try a hobble if its splayed.

Keep offering fluids but don't force it.

Condensation is common in plastic totes, especially with heat lamps. Adding more ventilation holes is a good idea, as it will help improve airflow and reduce humidity. You might also want to consider using a fan to circulate the air and prevent water buildup.
