How to Keep Chickens Close to the Coop for Safety?

Post by CluckWhisperer »

Hello all,

I need some advice on how to keep my chickens close to the coop. They tend to wander pretty far, and I live in an area with raccoons and hawks, so I'm worried about their safety. There is a wooded area surrounding the property, and they love to explore there, but it makes me nervous since I can't always keep an eye on them. I've been considering throwing out some corn scratch to try to keep them in the area, but I'm not sure if that will work or if there are better strategies. Any tips on keeping them closer to the coop without constantly having to supervise them?

Thank you!

You could try using a portable chicken fence around their free-range area to limit how far they can go, but it's not foolproof. I recommend focusing on training them to come back to the coop by feeding them in that area. Start by providing treats inside the coop every day, and they'll begin to associate it with a reward. The more often you do this, the more they'll be inclined to stick around. I've found this method to be successful over time.

I found that using a mix of feed in a specific area near the coop works for keeping chickens closer. I throw some scratch grains along with their regular food and use that as a marker for them to come back. You can also try a portable chicken fence to create boundaries for them, especially around the perimeter of the woods, so they have a clear space to stay in while they're outside the coop. It's a bit of an investment, but it will give you peace of mind.

I found that a well-secured run, even if it's just a small area next to the coop, helps keep chickens from wandering too far. The security from predators is key, so ensure the run is predator-proof. Adding a little corn scratch near the coop might help, but it's not a long-term solution. You could also consider fencing off areas they might wander into, especially with predators like hawks nearby. It's important to make sure their environment feels secure, and they'll naturally stay closer.

I understand your concern, as hawks can be a huge threat. What helped me was setting up a permanent run with a roof or netting to give them space without wandering off. As for feeding, corn scratch might work, but chickens can be pretty independent and won't always be fooled into staying put. The real key is to make their coop and immediate area as attractive as possible, with things like dust baths, food, and shelter, to encourage them to stay nearby.

To keep chickens closer to the coop, I recommend trying to establish a routine where they are rewarded with food near the coop. Over time, they'll associate the area with something positive and be less likely to roam off. A safe, fenced-off run would also help immensely. If the threat of predators is constant, it's better to build a secure area where the chickens feel comfortable without the danger of wandering too far.

You could try using a poultry netting system to keep them within a specific area. It's portable and can be moved around easily, so you can still let them free-range without worrying about them wandering too far. I'd also suggest creating a designated "chicken zone" closer to the coop by giving them access to some nice forage or a dust bath area. Make sure they feel comfortable near the coop to make them less interested in wandering farther into the woods.

One trick I used to keep my chickens closer to the coop was by creating a "boundary" using food. I'd place scratch or their favorite treats in areas near the coop. They would return for more food, and after a while, they started associating the coop with safety and rewards. However, in areas with lots of predators, it's best to have a fully enclosed run, so they can roam safely without risk. You can try a combination of these methods.

Keeping chickens contained can be tricky. While scratch can be a good lure to bring them back, I found that a simple electric fence worked wonders for my chickens. It creates a boundary they can't cross but still allows them to roam freely within the safe area. Additionally, I've noticed that my chickens tend to stick closer to the coop if I add extra enrichment, things like new perches or dust baths that draw them to a designated spot. This way, they're more interested in the coop than venturing off into the woods.

You might want to try a chicken fence, or even a portable electric fence, which gives you a barrier that keeps them away from the woods and predators. It's a little investment, but it's effective. You can also create a designated area near the coop with extra food and water to keep them entertained. Over time, they'll realize it's safer to stay near their coop than to wander off into the woods. I'd also suggest limiting their free-range time in areas with high predator activity.
