How Long Can a Broody Hen Be Off Her Nest?
I have a broody hen sitting on fertile eggs, and Im trying to figure out how long she can safely leave the nest before the eggs get too cold. She has her own separate space, but she gets up occasionally to eat, drink, and dust bathenever for more than 30 minutes. When she returns, she sometimes tries to sit in the wrong nest, and I have to move her back to her eggs. Were on day 4 of incubation, and the weather here in Georgia is still quite warm.
Is this normal behavior, or should I be worried about the eggs cooling down too much? How long is too long for her to be away? Id love to hear from others with experienceshould I intervene more, or is she likely to figure things out on her own?

You're doing everything right by watching her closely! Some broody hens get distracted by other eggs, so gently moving her back is a good idea. If the wrong nesting box is too appealing, you could remove extra eggs or make that area less inviting. In warm weather, eggs can tolerate short cooling periods, but if she keeps leaving too often, you might need to intervene more.

If she struggles to find her nest, consider blocking off the other nesting boxes. That might help her stay on track.

A 30-minute break won't hurt. In nature, hens leave their nests for short periods. Just watch to make sure she returns.

If she consistently picks the wrong nest, you might consider moving her and the eggs into a more enclosed broody area. That could help her stay committed.

It's great that you're paying close attention! A broody hen leaving for short breaks is completely normal. In fact, too much hovering over her could stress her out. If she's struggling to return to the right spot, consider making her nesting area more distinct by adding a small visual marker. Some people also use a covered broody box to keep her focused. As long as she's returning quickly, your eggs should be just fine.
I love chickens. Everyone loves chickens, don't they?

Short breaks are natural, but if she starts staying away longer or seems restless, there could be an issue. Keep an eye on her behavior over the next few days.

It's completely normal for a broody hen to take short breaks, especially in warm weather. The eggs retain heat well, and nature has built in some flexibility. You might notice that wild birds also leave their nests briefly without harming their eggs. Since she's returning within 30 minutes, there's little risk.

She's probably okay, but if she keeps leaving for long periods, you might want to check if anything is bothering her, mites, an uncomfortable nest, or competition from other hens.

Broody hens naturally take breaks. If it's warm out, the eggs will hold heat. Just make sure she gets back to the right nest.
