Which Chicken Breeds Start Laying the Earliest?

When I first started raising chickens, I couldn’t wait for that first egg
It felt like forever!
I know some breeds start laying earlier than others
So I’d love to learn from those with experience.

Which chicken breeds have started laying the fastest for you?
Were there any surprises or tricks that helped speed up egg production?

I had a mixed flock, and my Easter Eggers actually surprised me by starting to lay around 18 weeks. They weren’t the absolute earliest, but the excitement of getting different colored eggs made the wait worth it. If you want variety and early eggs, they’re a fun choice!

I raised a batch of Barred Rocks, and they started laying right around 19 weeks. Not the absolute fastest, but they were very steady and reliable layers once they got going. They also have a great temperament, which is a big plus if you want a calm flock.

My Rhode Island Reds took a little longer, around 18-19 weeks, but once they started, they laid strong, consistent eggs. I prefer them because they are hardy, great foragers, and have a long laying lifespan compared to some of the hybrids that burn out quickly.

Golden Comets have been my best early layers, usually starting around 17 weeks. They are a hybrid breed designed for high egg production, so not only do they start early, but they also lay consistently. They're also very docile, which is great if you want a friendly flock.

If you're in a colder climate, early egg laying can sometimes be delayed.
My Buff Orpingtons didn't start laying until about 20 weeks.
But I think it was because the daylight was decreasing.
If you're hoping for early layers in fall or winter, it might be worth supplementing light to encourage earlier production.

In my experience, early laying isn't just about breed-it's also about diet and environment.
I've found that providing plenty of protein and calcium early on helps encourage faster egg production.

My Sapphire Gems started at about 17 weeks.
Which I think was helped by their good diet and ample daylight exposure.

ISA Browns were my fastest layers.
They started at about 16 weeks, and they rarely skipped a day!

The downside is that they don't live as long as some heritage breeds.
Because they put so much energy into egg production.

If you're looking for a short-term, high-yield layer, they're the best option.
