Do I Need a License to Ship Fertile Chicken Eggs?

Post by HatchlingHustler »

Can I legally ship fertile chicken eggs across state or country borders without a license? If not, what permits or regulations apply? I searched online, but the information seems unclear. Has anyone navigated this process or know where to find reliable guidelines?

NPIP certification is often required for interstate shipments. It's a good idea to check both your state's and the recipient's regulations before sending eggs.

If selling, you may also need a business license or permit. Some states regulate egg sales, even for hatching purposes.

If you plan to ship fertile eggs regularly, it's worth looking into NPIP certification. Many buyers prefer NPIP-tested eggs because it guarantees the flock is free from certain diseases. The process involves testing your birds and getting approval to ship across state lines. Some states also require an import permit, even if the seller is NPIP-certified. If you're only shipping occasionally, check if a one-time permit is an option. For international sales, the process is more complex. Countries have strict biosecurity regulations, and shipments often need to go through quarantine or testing before entry. If you're just sending eggs as a hobby, you might get away with no paperwork, but for business purposes, proper certification is recommended.

If selling internationally, customs and biosecurity laws vary widely. Some countries require eggs to be disinfected or pass inspections before import.

It depends on your state and the destination. Check with your state's agriculture department and the USDA for requirements.

A good first step is to call your state's agriculture office. They can tell you whether NPIP or other permits are required for legal shipping.
