Hi all,
Im planning to fence off around half an acre for my poultry but cant decide on the best fencing option. My initial plan was to use 2m high green chain link with electric wire at the top and bottom, plus chicken wire dug in to deter diggers. However, my brother suggested using only electric wire, spaced every 10cm up to 2m, as a more cost-effective option.
Would a purely electric strand fence be enough to keep out badgers, foxes, and wild boar? Has anyone had success with this method, or should I stick with the chain link for better security?
Id love to hear your experiences and recommendations!

Electric fences work best when animals are trained to avoid them. Wild predators might test weak spots, so a solid barrier plus electric is safest.

Consider a hybrid approach: use chain link in high-risk areas and electric strands elsewhere. This way, you save money while keeping key areas more secure.

Electric fencing is great for deterring predators but requires regular maintenance. If weeds grow near it, it can short out, making it ineffective when you need it most.

I tried a purely electric setup, and while it worked for foxes, badgers still dug under it. They didn't respect the shock as much as I hoped. If you go electric-only, bury a mesh apron outward to discourage digging. Chain link provides extra security and peace of mind. Another tip, make sure your power source is reliable, as a power failure can leave your flock vulnerable overnight.

Chain link with electric reinforcement is worth the extra investment. A well-maintained electric fence can deter predators, but a determined animal might push through, especially during food shortages. I suggest using both for peace of mind.

Chain link with electric wire adds physical strength. Pure electric works short-term but might fail if power cuts or animals push through despite the shocks.

I've used both setups, and while electric fencing can work, it requires proper maintenance. Wild boars and badgers are powerful enough to push through if desperate. A physical barrier like chain link gives a solid defense, and adding electric strands reinforces it. I recommend at least a buried apron of chicken wire to stop diggers and keeping vegetation trimmed near the electric fence so it stays effective.
