Best Livestock Guardian Dog Breeds for Backyard Chickens?

Post by CluckWhisperer »

Im thinking of getting a livestock guardian dog to help protect my flock. What breeds have you had the best experience with around chickens? Looking for calm, protective, and chicken-friendly!

Kangals are brilliant and powerful. Socialize early, and they'll treat your flock like their own.

We love our Akbash! They're loyal and calm, great with our hens but tough on predators.

Our Maremma watches over chickens, ducks, and goats. It took time to train, but now she's gentle and protective.

Spanish Mastiffs are patient and low-energy but super protective. Ours is great around the coop.
People who count their chickens before they are hatched act very wisely because chickens run about so absurdly that it's impossible to count them accurately.

Kangal dogs are incredible! Smart, brave, and very devoted. Just be sure to socialize them early with your birds.
