Whats the Most Unexpected Benefit Your Flock Has Brought to Your Garden?
We all know chickens and ducks help with pest control and provide great fertilizer but have you noticed any surprising perks from having them around your garden? Maybe theyve improved your soil in unexpected ways, kept certain weeds in check, or even changed how you approach your planting?
For me, my chickens have been incredible at aerating the soil in my raised beds during the off-season their scratching saves me a lot of work! Ive also noticed they keep ants and ticks away from my greenhouse area, which I hadnt even thought about when I started keeping them.
Id love to hear the unique or unexpected ways your flock has helped your garden thrive!

Chickens turned my old, compacted soil into rich, fluffy gold , their scratching and manure improved it beyond what I ever managed with a tiller.

My chickens' foraging cut down on weeds and pests in a huge way. They eat young weed sprouts and keep beetles and grasshoppers in check , it's been amazing!

I never expected my flock to help so much with weed control, but it's been a game-changer. I let my chickens patrol the walkways and the outer edges of my garden, and they keep those areas almost entirely weed-free. They eat the young sprouts before they have a chance to take over, and their constant scratching keeps the soil surface loose and easy to manage. Another surprise has been the quality of my compost. When I toss garden scraps and coop bedding into my compost pile, my chickens get right in there and turn it for me. Their scratching keeps the pile aerated, and their manure speeds up the decomposition process. I used to struggle with getting my compost hot enough, but since adding their contributions, I get rich, finished compost in half the time. They've become an essential part of my gardening routine in ways I never expected.

I never realized how calming their presence would be. Gardening's more peaceful with their soft clucks in the background.

Surprisingly, my flock keeps the snake population down! I hardly ever see them anymore since the chickens started patrolling the garden.

Re: Whats the Most Unexpected Benefit Your Flock Has Brought to Your Garden?
One of the most unexpected benefits my flock brought to my gardening efforts was how much they improved my soil structure. Before I had chickens, my garden beds were always a bit compacted, and even with composting and mulching, the soil just didn't have that loose, crumbly texture I wanted. Once I started letting my flock scratch through the fall and early spring, everything changed. Their constant digging aerated the soil far better than any tool I used, and their manure added nutrients I hadn't even realized my garden was missing. But beyond the physical improvement, I've also noticed a shift in my pest population. My hens seem to love hunting beetles and larvae, and I've seen far fewer issues with squash bugs and cabbage worms. Plus, their presence keeps smaller rodents at bay , no more voles digging tunnels through my beds. I expected eggs and compost, but their impact on my garden ecosystem was an amazing bonus.

I didn't expect my chickens to control ants, but they do! By hunting the ants, they've also reduced my aphid problem , my plants are so much healthier.

I never expected my flock to control weeds! They keep my garden paths clear by eating young sprouts before they take over.

One of the biggest surprises has been how my flock improved my compost. Their constant scratching keeps it aerated, and their manure adds the perfect nitrogen boost. My compost breaks down faster and richer than ever!
