8-Month-Old Marans Still Not Laying

Post by FeatheredPhilosopher »

Hey everyone!

Ive always wanted to have Black Copper Marans, so when I found a local breeder last spring through a mutual friend, I jumped at the chance! I ended up getting three Black Copper Marans and three Blue Copper Marans, and theyve been such a great addition to my flock.

Theyre now about eight months old, fully integrated with my other hens but still sticking together as a little group of six. The issue isthey still havent laid a single egg! Meanwhile, my other chickens from a hatchery all started laying by 18 weeks, so Im starting to wonder if something is off.

Theyre active, healthy, and social, and my rooster hasnt shown much interest in them yet. Ive been feeding them the same diet as my other birds, and they have access to plenty of calcium and fresh water.

Is this normal for Marans, or is there something I should be doing differently? How much longer should I expect to wait? Would love to hear from anyone with experience raising these breeds!

Marans are known for being slower to mature, so I wouldn't worry just yet. You might start seeing eggs soon, especially as daylight increases. Are you supplementing with light at all?

Diet and protein levels can impact laying. Are they getting at least 1618% protein? Some heritage breeds need a little extra to kickstart laying.

I had a similar issue with my Marans last year! They didn't lay until 10 months, but once they started, they were very consistent. Give them a bit more time.

Have you noticed any squatting behavior when you go to pet them? That's a great sign that laying is right around the corner.

I've had Marans before, and mine didn't start laying until around 30 weeks. Their eggs were a bit smaller at first but darkened up over time. Hang in there!

Some Marans lines are bred more for show than for egg production, which can lead to slower development. Do you know if your breeder focused more on egg color or appearance?

You might try offering some extra calcium like crushed oyster shells if you haven't already. Even before they start laying, it helps prepare their bodies for production.

Have you checked their pelvic bones? If they're still close together, they're not quite ready. If they're widening, eggs should be coming soon!

If they're not showing signs of illness and are eating well, I'd just be patient. Marans are notorious for taking their time but usually start by 9–10 months.
