How Do You Keep Track of Which Hen Is Laying?
I've noticed that many people here seem to have a detailed and accurate record of their hens' laying history.
How do you all keep track?
When I have days off, I check on my flock frequently.
But I can only guess which breeds are laying—not specific hens.
I definitely couldn't recall from memory the last time an individual hen laid an egg!
Do you use cameras, charts, or some other tracking system?
I'd love to get a better handle on my flock’s laying habits but have no idea how to manage it.
Any tips?
Thanks in advance!

I’ve started using a notebook where I list the dates and hen names. It’s pretty low-tech but effective for keeping track of things!

I’ve used a chart on the fridge. Each hen has a column, and I just make a quick mark when they lay. Nothing fancy but it works!

I've been tracking the eggs by hen by just paying attention to their behavior.
It's tricky but it helps me narrow down who's laying!

I set up a small camera in the coop to monitor them and use the footage to keep track of who's laying. Helps me identify patterns.

I just use a simple notepad on my phone.
to jot down when each hen lays.
I have a general idea of which ones lay when
But it's not super detailed.

I've tried keeping a log on a spreadsheet, but I find it hard to keep up with. I'm thinking about switching to a mobile app.
One day I'd love a house in the country, with some chickens, dogs and kids.

I have a system of colored leg bands, and I take note of who's laying when. That way, I can match the color with the eggs.

A digital calendar app can work wonders for tracking! You can set reminders and even add notes for each hen's laying schedule.

I rely on a combination of intuition and a loose mental system. It's not perfect, but it helps me spot trends with the flock.
