Hey everyone,
I hope you're all having a fantastic day!
I'm reaching out because one of my hens has been inside for the past two weeks recovering from a severe respiratory infection. Honestly, I was really worried I was going to lose her, but I'm thrilled to say she's doing much better now! She's eating and drinking on her own, her appetite is back, and she's no longer gasping for air or dozing off. She's back to being energetic and alert - such a relief!
The weather's been warming up a bit (we're back in the 70s, with lows in the 40s-50s), and I'm wondering if it's safe to put her back in the fenced yard with the other three hens, or if it might still be too soon. I don't want to rush it, so if I do reintroduce her and it's too early, how soon should I expect to see signs that she's not quite ready to rejoin the flock?
I really appreciate any thoughts or advice you all can share.
Thanks so much for the support!

Hi,
Based on what you've shared, I think you could try it, but take it slow.
Start by allowing her to interact with the flock in short, supervised sessions to see how she reacts.

I’ll change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot!

Hello,
I think the warm temperatures and her appetite returning.
I think that's a good sign that she's getting back to her old self.
I'd still keep her separated from the others for a few hours each day at first.
It will surely give her time to readjust.

It's great to hear she's doing so well! I agree with the others - it sounds like she's almost back to normal.

I'd say it's worth trying to let her back out. I think she'll be okay, but you know your hen best.
The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not by smashing it.

Im so glad to hear your hen is recovering! Its always tough when theyre sick, but it sounds like shes doing much better. Since the weather is mild, I think it should be okay to let her back outside, but Id recommend keeping an eye on her the first few days.
If shes still acting energetic and eating/drinking well, she should be fine. If you notice any signs of fatigue, coughing, or her becoming lethargic again, it might be a sign that its too soon. Gradually reintroducing her to the flock in a controlled manner could also help.

Id agree with others here that its probably okay to let her out, but I would be cautious. Start by letting her spend a little time outside with the flock but keep an eye on her for any signs of fatigue or wheezing.

I totally understand your concerns - it's always a tricky call after an illness. If she's been improving steadily and doesn't show any signs of relapse, I think you can cautiously reintroduce her to the flock. The weather is also on your side with the mild temps, which is great! Just try to keep her separated for a little bit when you first put her back in, so she can adjust and get reacquainted with the other hens without too much stress. Watch for signs like wheezing, heavy breathing, or acting sluggish, as these could signal she's not quite ready.
