How Can I Tell if My Chickens Have Fleas or Lice?

Post by VeggieVibes »

Hi everyone!

I’ve noticed that my chickens have been pecking at their own wings, chest, and legs a lot recently. I’m wondering if they might have fleas or lice, or if they’re just grooming themselves. How can I tell the difference? Are there any signs I should look for to know if they have pests?

Any tips on how to check for fleas or lice, and how to treat them if they do have them, would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!
People who count their chickens before they are hatched act very wisely because chickens run about so absurdly that it's impossible to count them accurately.

It’s possible your chickens might have fleas or lice if they’re pecking at themselves a lot. To check, look closely at their feathers, especially around the vent area, under the wings, and near the legs. Fleas are tiny and can move quickly, while lice will look like small white or yellowish eggs stuck to the base of the feathers. If you see these, it’s likely they have pests.

I recommend using a poultry dusting powder or a natural remedy like diatomaceous earth to treat them, but make sure to follow the instructions carefully. Also, try to keep their living area clean, as pests can thrive in dirty bedding.

Chickens do a lot of preening to groom themselves, but if they’re pecking at their wings, chest, or legs more than usual, it could be a sign of pests like lice or mites. You might also see feather loss or irritated skin if it’s bad.

Check their feathers for tiny black or red spots, which can indicate lice or mites. If you don’t find anything but notice they’re still pecking a lot, it could just be regular grooming, but it’s always worth a closer look! Treating them with a safe insecticidal powder or using a natural solution like neem oil can help if pests are found.

If your chickens are pulling out their feathers or causing injuries to themselves, it might be lice or mites.
Try checking with a fine-toothed comb to see if there is anything crawling on their skin.

One of the first signs of lice or fleas is often visible irritation or bald spots. Inspect their vent area and under their wings. Treating with a safe poultry dust should help if pests are the issue.

To confirm if it's fleas or lice, part their feathers and look for small, dark insects. You might also see eggs attached to the feather shafts. If so, a treatment like dusting them with permethrin can help.

Check their skin and feathers thoroughly. Lice or fleas will often hide near the base of feathers, especially around the neck, vent, and under the wings. Regular cleaning and treating with natural products can help prevent pests.

My chickens have been more prone to feather picking when they have lice. Make sure to check around their vents and under their wings for signs of pests like small, white eggs or black specks.

You can check for fleas or lice by looking for small, moving insects in the feathers or around the vent area. If you see tiny black specks, those could be signs of parasites. A dust bath with DE (diatomaceous earth) could help!

If you see scabs, bald patches, or a lot of fussing with their feathers, mites or lice could be the cause. Dusting them with food-grade diatomaceous earth can help treat external pests.
